Middle Ages: The Vikings

Come and Learn about the Vikings!

Women in the Viking age weren't allowed on the raids so they stayed ta the "homeland" to work with clothes and food. They could be shepherds to herd the sheep. The women couldn't typically be outside the "threshold". Only in the summer they could be outside the threshold to milk the sheep and get wool to spin some string. Inside the threshold women would make dairy products such as milk, cheese, and butter. They would even make alcoholic drinks.
Even when the weren't married (widowhood), they could be very rich or own a lot of land like any other man that was important to the Norse era. In a book, called Laxdæla. It described how a woman moved from Norway to Scotland with her son and father, but when both of them had died she had moved away to Iceland to meet up with her family that lasted. She had gotten there , got a house, got a farm, and took care of what a man would typically do. She took care of the chores a man would do. She later died and was honored like a wealthy man, which was being set on a boat and was set up in a burial mound.

The Vikings played many, many games such as board games..
Vikings made game boards that were about 7x7 squars right and can be up to 19x19 squares completely. The game pieces made with glass, bronze. amber, bones, and wood. People found dice while finding all the other pieces but the possibly go to other games.
They also played drinking games. Men would take Drinks and attack each other verbally as a game. This would say that they are manlier than the other if they won this game and got a better rep and the other would have gotten a worse reputation. They would continue drinking until the other had given up with the verbal abuse and taunts. The more out of "judgement" they got the more verbally abused each other would get.

Before Vikings were huge with raids in England, they settled down in the islands of Britain. The Vikings mad a huge cultural impact on the British islands. The Vikings, with their old Norse language and old English language mixed. A word "Berserk" Comes from the old Norse with the definition "bear shirt"  or " bear" . The word Berserk meant outraged or really made or even gone crazy with anger.

Vikings were known for their traveling and raiding. They traveled all over the Atlantic Ocean. They traveled as far as Canada. They were especially known for their amazing boats that were easily maneuvered, very slim, and very useful. They sleek body of the boat made it easy to travel against the heavy cold wings of the northern Atlantic Ocean.
The Vikings would use crystals that they called "sunstones" to travel and navigate through the harsh ocean. The crystals were used to calculate where they were from the sun. Almost like a sundial but with a crystal to navigate where they were at what time.
